The Missing Pieces
Can I be honest? There are a few missing pieces that I’ve noticed.
During my career, I’ve worked in various marketing roles including content production, paid social, communications, community, events, content strategy, email marketing, copywriting, consulting, and coaching those elements. The similarities? It’s creative, people-focused, and drives people into your funnel.
These missing pieces are the same across industries - non-profit, agency, hospitality, small business, and big corporations.
Regardless of the role or of the industry, I’ve noticed certain truths in content marketing.
Truths in Content Marketing
An inspired action is the result of a connection. It’s the result of speaking to your ideal fan.
The story draws people in. It creates connections. Use your history and your athletes to build storytelling pieces.
We purchase based on emotions, then later justify it through logical reasoning.
You need to know who you’re speaking to, in order to effectively speak to them.
An audience needs to be told what action to take, otherwise, it’s a guessing game.
Everything you put out there needs to be connected back to the legacy that you want to leave.
If you have a platform, use it. Social good is good social.
So, what are the foundational elements required for putting this all together?
Foundational Elements
It’s the foundational elements that either make or break your content.
Your ideal fan - who is the person that you’re trying to target
What is your funnel - how does your ideal fan move down the chains with you
Location - where is your ideal fan hanging out (i.e. social media, radio, print, broadcast, website), how can you show up there
Connection - what are your connection pieces with your ideal fan
Inspired action - what emotion are you trying to create through your content, what do you want to leave them with, and what action do you want them to take
Legacy - what legacy do you want to leave, is everything that you do lining up with it?

In my work, I use my signature method- the NLSH [National Legacy Storytelling Huddle], a 7-step framework to put everything together. The NLSH method encompasses:
