Passion to Legacy

Career paths in sports

in this episode,

I cover:

  • The various job roles and descriptions

  • The hard and soft skills that somebody would need to succeed in these roles

Patty Ahlman - Recreational Partner Acrobatics and Handstand Coach (Episodes 2 & 3)

Handstands are typically seen throughout gymnastics, acrobatics, breakdancing, circus arts, yoga, and CrossFit.

The art itself requires strength, flexibility, and mental focus. The different benefits of doing handstands include mental focus, improved blood circulation, better core strength and stability, increased strength of your upper body and greater control of your breathing.

Rec partner acrobatics & handstand coach role

The Coach

The coach's role is to teach based on principles, to provide different explanations, and to also show the work that they're expecting. The role of a coach for handstands is to train an individual in a way that actually pushes them past the mental limits that they have.

An Acrobatics Coach

Patty also teaches acrobatics. In acrobatics, there is a big focus on strength, balance, and flexibility. Your job is to observe and evaluate an athlete's skills. You want to be able to motivate them and prepare them for events. You would also need to be a bit analytical to analyze their performance.

Skillset

The skillset of a coach would be enthusiasm, strong communication skills. They're people focused and oriented. They demonstrate strong leadership ability and mentorship. They're able to not only trust in themselves, but trust in their athletes and create an environment where that athlete is able to trust in them.

In many ways they act as a role-model. They help facilitate goal setting. They're able to listen and be empathetic towards their different athletes.

Gina Franz - Sports Marketing & Partnerships (Episodes 4 & 5)

Partner marketing is when two different organizations come together to collaborate in a way that's mutually beneficial for both parties. Oftentimes, you're tapping into somebody else's warm audience.

You are also creating a shared marketing strategy because the two of you are now collectively working towards one goal. As a result of that, it's important that these organizations are aligned.

Sports marketing & partnership role

In this role,

you need to ensure that the activation and execution of these partnerships is brought out. You are able to really develop and build relationships. You're analytical and able to go through data to see what is working and what is not working. You have to ensure that the revenue targets are being met, either through revenue targets or data that's being driven to a website.

Soccer & business coach for the athletically minded

Kim Brady - Soccer Coach & Business Coach (Episodes 6 & 7)

Kim has a very unique approach when it comes to business coaching. She includes the different elements that are from the athletic mindset.

An athlete needs a coach

In order to succeed in coaching, you either need to have been in the shoes of the person who you are speaking to, or you need to have done a lot of research and figured out something that's missing and the solution to that. When it comes to this sort of coaching, think about it in the same way that you would think about an athlete who needs a coach.

For instance, a soccer athlete needs a coach to be able to walk them through different drills and see things that they otherwise would miss. In relation to Kim, she could help somebody who wants to go from corporate into entrepreneurship. Or she could help an athlete who now wants to have something post athletic career.

Succedding as a business coach

In order to succeed, you need to be able to develop and lead people through training. You need to be able to articulate your message and push your clients to think outside of the box.

You are somebody who would be very detail-organized, have good time management skills, and be able to remember where it is that your clients are at in their journey.

A successful coach is also somebody who acts as a super connector and knows their clients well enough to then be able to put them in contact with other people who can help them expand through different partnership opportunities.

Kelly Baird - Senior Brand Partner Strategist (Episodes 8 & 9)

A Sports Business

Brand strategy, partnerships, & integrated marketing roles

Brand strategy is when you have different key elements that make your brand unique. This is how people portray you, your mission, and your position in the market. Your brand strategy is ultimately how you stand apart from others.

Branding is more so on the strategy side of things, whereas marketing is the tactical implementation. The two are interconnected, but in order to be able to successfully market, you need the brand strategy in place.

Partnerships are about connecting with somebody who is aligned with what you're trying to do. It is about finding a mutually beneficial way to support each other and tap into one another’s audiences.

Integrated marketing is the strategy for delivering your message. This would be the communication that you have across different mediums, which includes paid media and also owned media, such as social media platforms or email list.

This person would need to be able to collect data to see what is and isn't working and be able to streamline the work that they're doing. This is also somebody who is creative and very strategic. They're able to think outside of the box, see the bigger picture and break it down, and then interconnect everything from seeing that bigger picture.

Mandy Bauer - Director of Hospitality (Episode 10)

A Sports Business Podcast

Director of Hospitality role

This role is really focused on the customer experience. You're trying to out-shine different entertainment options. You want people to not only enjoy their stay, but to also stay longer and build a connection.

This role is very people oriented. As the Director of Hospitality, you would oversee the budget and be in charge of ordering products to make sure that everything is stocked correctly. The role is also in charge of hiring and training. They create work schedules for the people who are employees. They would also be addressing different customer concerns. The goal of anybody in hospitality is to make sure that your guests are happy and taken care of.
