Passion to Legacy
If you haven’t already, be sure to check out episode 12 for part 1 of my interview with Hilary Arentz-Huffman.
Hilary is a Certified Personal Trainer and earned a B.S. in Kinesiology from CSULB. Her training style varies from one-on-one sessions, to virtual small group classes. She is currently in the process of creating a larger online presence with an on-demand library of live classes.
Her goal is to provide a fully inclusive, judgement-free space where all bodies, and all levels of strength are celebrated. Play is encouraged, because fitness should be FUN, and feel good!
in this episode,
we dive into her humanitarian spirit. Hilary teaches many training sessions at an assisted living facility for adults with special needs who want to live a more independent life.
She shares insight into what it is like planning a triathlon for them, as well as how she has found a passion for helping them tap into their version of what strong is.
Planning a Triathlon
Hilary’s favorite event that she took part in was called “Triathlon”. It consisted of several activities which included running, walking, bike riding, strengthened agility , and swimming.
Each activity could be modified for each individual and the ultimate goal was to just have fun. A lot of planning was needed, as well as a lot of volunteers to make sure things ran smoothly.
Finding your passion
Even though her ideal clients in the beginning were athletes, Hillary has found a passion in doing the reverse of that.
“I really enjoy seeing progression from that major modification and watching them progress and feel so confident.
Sometimes it would go completely out the window because maybe we're just not having a good day and we just need to slow it down or take it down a notch.
Learning to adapt and remembering that one size does not fit all patients.”
Advice
For those interested in getting involved with teaching special-needs adults, Hilary recommends to network and find a program that aligns with your interests. Once you have found a program, contact them to see what activities are missing and how you can contribute.
